I want to leave solder mask openings in strategic places like guard ring copper. So I add Top Mask and Bottom Mask to DesignTech->Layers and draw what I want. However, now all of the solder mask is drawn on the PCB and it covers up the copper pads, making routing more difficult. Most of the time I do not want to see the solder mask. Yes, I can turn it off in the Layers box but if I click the quick-button for layers it turns back on along with its associated copper layer. Any way around this? Thanks.

Create a "Layers" tab on the right hand screen edge ("View=>Dockable Bars=> Layers") & then you can enable/ disable ALL layers individually.
