I have an issue with display settings which is now driving me mental!
I'm doing a PCB layout and I've set Paste and Resist to be non-visible in the Display dialog (because by default, these are on when you start editing your PCB layout!). Now, if I use the layer buttons on the side of the edit window (top, mid and bottom), so I can clear the clutter when flipping from layer to layer as I'm routing, the display setting I have set to non-displayed (i.e. Paste and Resist) get enabled again ... and IT'S DRIVING ME MAD! 1) It never used to show paste and resist in the PCB editor by default! 2) How do I get the display setting to remember what I tell it ? ... and not do its own thing. Essentially, I want the 3 buttons on the side of the screen to hide/show the 'Displayed=Yes' items and ignore Displayed=No items until I go back into the display dialog and change the settings .... and not RESET ALL to display=Yes!! Argggghhhhh! |

I have noticed this in the past and just put up with it but it is irritating. If you have recently added paste and resist layers rather than using the "default paste and resist" then this is perhaps why you are now seeing this problem for the first time.
I use other layers for information etc and if you switch them off they do reappear using the left side buttons. Unless there is a way round this, it would be good to suggest this as a V20 feature.

It's true that the 'filing cabinet' icons are pretty crude. They intentionally enable and disable all 'Top', 'Inner' and 'Bottom' layers, so, of course, any specific layer selections will be lost.
It's very much like the section selection check boxes in the design rule check dialogue, and, for the same reasons, unlikely to be changed. What might be possible is a similar facility to the DRC where preset patterns of enabled layers could be saved. I suspect this would have to be accessed either through [View], [Display], or from the 'Layers' dockable bar. |

Peter,
It would be a nice enhancement to be able to save Display -> Layer view settings (as I think you are suggesting), then assign a saved view setting to a custom button. Essentially giving you the 'filing' cabinet buttons (and more if you want) giving the user complete flexibility ... Almost 'Custom Views' as you get in any software development IDE or 2D/3D CAD package. Bit disappointed that you say 'unlikely to be changed' ... as better, slicker workflow and easy of use are essential to productivity.
Iain, Yes I've been using my own Paste and Resist layers in order to get full control over exceptions and add shapes on those layers in library parts for a while now. It gives me greater control and flexibility of my design. It's only in the last few versions that this has been noticeable. I think as the program functionality develops (i.e. Add paste and resist shapes to PCB symbols) the rest on the program needs to adapt too. Definitely a v20 request for me too ! |

I tend to use the layers dockable bar for this. There you can simply tick/untick any layer in the design as you work, but I do have a habit of going to the filing cabinet buttons by mistake !
So unless any mod was to the filing cabinet button buttons, it wouldn't really make much of a difference to me.

Thanks Iain, Looks like I need to have a look later at what the Layers toolbar can do for me ! I'm just so used to using the filing cabinet buttons and nothing else.
I'm currently on v19.0.4, but Just tried it on my laptop on v15.0.8 and even with my own Resist and Paste layers (Paste Mask and Solder Mask still there but not used), the filing cabinet buttons (and layer toolbar) does not show the paste and resist artwork when selected ON ... but 19.0.4 does! some something has definitely changed. But I do like how v15 hides the layers, yet it must be a bug to get that behavior as i'm actually requesting them to be displayed !!
EDIT : Just played with the layer toolbar in v15 and it would be good if the layer toolbar could be enhanced to allow those selected to be grouped and selected/de-selected in one operation via a radio button type operation. i.e. Layer view groups. |
