I've used wire links in designs quite a lot and never had a problem, but the last set of boards I had made came back with solder resist over the pads. Not a major issue, I just had to scrape it off so I could solder the wires.
I'm designing a new board now and decided to get to the bottom of this. I noticed that by default a wire link is terminated in vias (why??). I decided to try changing this, went into defaults, and set the pad style to be an existing type of normal copper pad that I use for resistors. However, when I place a link it still puts vias on the ends, vias with the dimensions of the pad I specified. I suspect if I had these made the boards would come back with resist on the pads again. They are vias, so why would there not be?!
Is there a way to force links to have ordinary pads instead of vias? Alternatively is there a way to ensure vias have holes in the solder mask?
Also, why don't wires appear in the 3D view?
What would be a great improvement is to be able to use zero-ohm resistors as links without having to define them in the schematic.
